Paediatric Eye Examinations

Children experience rapid growth, and their vision needs evolve just as quickly.

Ensuring Healthy Vision from Infancy through Adolescence

Children experience rapid growth, and their vision needs evolve just as quickly. Regular eye exams are crucial to keep up with these changes and ensure optimal visual development at every stage of life.

While many people are familiar with general eye care principles—such as the importance of annual exams, the need for corrective eyewear, and sun protection—the basics of eye care for children have unique considerations. We recommend scheduling your baby’s first eye exam at six months. By this age, your infant should be able to see colors, focus at varying distances, and track moving objects. During this initial exam, our doctor will check for common refractive errors, such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), strabismus (misalignment), and astigmatism.

Premature infants or those with developmental delays may require more frequent monitoring. In such cases, our team will closely track your child’s vision over time to ensure any changes are promptly addressed.

Eye Development by Age

Birth to 24 Months :Newborns have an underdeveloped visual system, but their vision gradually improves. By 7-24 months, your baby’s vision and motor skills advance significantly. They will start to engage in activities like crawling, standing, and reaching for objects. If you notice any difficulties with these movements, please consult us for an evaluation.

2 to 5 Years: During the preschool years, children develop essential fine motor skills and visual perception abilities. Good vision is critical as 80% of learning is visual. Difficulties with clear vision can impact learning and development, so it’s important to address any issues early.

6 to 18 Years: Known as the formative years, this period encompasses significant physical, academic, and social changes. Vision problems such as nearsightedness often begin during this time. Annual eye exams are crucial to check visual acuity, eye coordination, color vision, and peripheral vision.

Glasses and Contacts for Kids

Children needing vision correction have several options. Stylish glasses can provide clear vision while boosting self-confidence. For active children or those concerned about appearance, contact lenses may be a suitable alternative, typically recommended for ages 11-14. Consult Dr. Shalini Jain for personalized advice.

Vision and Learning

Changes in a child’s behavior or academic performance might be attributed to various factors, but they could also indicate vision problems. Watch for signs such as:

  • Avoidance of reading

  • Blurry or double vision

  • Excessive blinking

  • Eyestrain

  • Frequent loss of place while reading

  • Persistent headaches

  • Poor reading comprehension

  • Short attention span

  • Tilting the head to one side

These symptoms can lead to emotional responses like frustration and irritability, affecting school performance and overall well-being. If your child exhibits any of these signs, contact Dr. Shalini Jain’s Samyak Eye Care Clinic for a comprehensive evaluation. Our expert team and advanced technology are dedicated to diagnosing and treating vision issues in school-aged children.
